Victoria Wezi Mhone was born on 25 May 1992 in Ndola, Zambia. Her father was Apostle Simon Mhone (now deceased), and her mother is Pastor Royce Chanje Banda. From a young age, she was drawn to music and performing. By age 7 she was already singing for school, family, and in church settings. At around age 11 she began writing poems and composing songs. She attended North Rise Basic School in Ndola for primary schooling and went on to Dominican Convent High School. She later studied at the University of Zambia in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
Entry into Music & Early Career
Professionally, Wezi’s music career began around 2012–2013. She signed her first record deal in 2013 with Bizzy Baila International, under which she released singles such as Ambuya, Nipulumuseni, and Tichitenji. After leaving that label in 2014, she briefly worked with Vibrant Media and then MOJO Music, though many of her songs with those labels were not released.
In 2016, she released her debut EP titled Uhai. This EP proved to be a major turning point, earning her the New Artist of the Year prize at the 2016 Zambia Music Awards. The launch of Uhai was a significant event; she performed at Alliance Française in a show with a full house, joined by other artists such as Jay Rox, Cleo Ice Queen, Maureen Lilanda, etc.
Style, Themes, and Influence
Wezi is recognised for her unique blend of Afro-soul / neo-soul, Afropop, pop and occasional jazz influences. Her lyrical content often draws from her faith, personal experiences (both uplifting and challenging), relationships, and social issues. She has spoken about self-image challenges and uses her platform to address matters like gender-based violence and social justice.
